Milewell documentation

Milewell puts a roadmap or Gantt chart on a Confluence page: lanes, bars, milestones, dependencies, markers and a today line, with every change saved as a version you can restore.

Add a roadmap

  1. Edit a page or blog post and type /Milewell, then pick Milewell roadmap.
  2. Publish the page. The roadmap is edited right on the published page; you don't need to open the page editor again.
  3. Choose Start with an example, Start blank or Import Roadmap Planner or CSV.

Anyone who can edit the page can edit its roadmap. Anyone who can view the page can view the roadmap, its history and its links.

Build the plan

ToDo this
Add a lane+ Lane. Click a lane name to rename it, recolor it, move it up or down, or delete it (asks first; deleted items stay in the history)
Add a bar+ Bar (starts today), or double-click an empty spot in a lane (starts on that day)
Move a barDrag it. Drag it up or down to move it to another lane
Change datesDrag either end of the bar, or type the dates in the panel on the right
NudgeSelect an item and press the left or right arrow (Shift for a week)
Add a milestone+ Milestone, then drag the diamond to its date
Add a marker+ Marker: a dashed line across the whole roadmap for a release, freeze or launch
Add a dependencyHover a bar and drag the small dot at its end onto another bar or milestone. Or select an item and use Waits for... in the panel
Remove a dependencyClick the arrow, then Remove dependency
Show progressSelect a bar and set Progress; a thin line fills along the bottom of the bar
UndoUndo and Redo, or Ctrl/Cmd+Z and Shift+Ctrl/Cmd+Z

An arrow turns red when the work that waits starts before the work it waits for ends. Milewell refuses dependencies that would make a loop.

Zoom, range and working days

  • Days, Weeks, Months, Quarters switch the time scale. Today scrolls to today.
  • View sets a fixed date range (or fits the range to the items), the first day of the week (Monday with ISO week numbers, or Sunday), the working days (non-working days are shaded in day and week zoom), the today line and dates printed on bars.
  • Bars can start and end on any day, weekends included.

Link bars to Jira and Confluence

Select a bar or milestone and use Link:

  • Jira work item: search by key or text and pick one. The panel then shows the work item's status, summary, start date and due date, and Use these dates copies them onto the bar. A colored dot on the bar shows the status category (gray to do, blue in progress, green done).
  • Confluence page: search by title and pick one.

Viewers only see details of work items and pages they can open themselves. Jira links need the app to be connected to Jira on your site (Administration > Apps, or ask your site admin). Milewell only reads Jira; it never changes your work items.

History and restore

History lists every saved version with who saved it and when. Pick one to preview it, then:

  • Restore this version: becomes the newest version. The version you replaced stays in the history, so a restore can be undone too.
  • Name this version: for example "Approved by the board". Named versions are kept forever.
  • Download CSV of that version.

Versions from the last 30 days are all kept. Older ones are thinned to the last version of each hour, then of each day after a year. The first and current versions, named versions, imports, copies and restores (and the version before each restore) are always kept.

Editing at the same time

Milewell saves a second after you stop changing things. If someone else saved in the meantime, the two saves are merged item by item: different bars, lanes or fields merge on their own. If you both changed the same thing (the same bar's end date, say), Milewell shows both values and asks which to keep; nothing is saved until you choose. Decide later keeps your changes on screen.

Every 15 seconds the roadmap checks for newer versions and loads them when you have nothing unsaved. If you lose your connection or close the tab before a save, your changes are kept in your browser; reopen the page and click Restore them.

Import

Import > Roadmap Planner on this page: put a Milewell macro on a page that has a built-in Roadmap Planner macro, publish, then pick the Roadmap Planner. Lanes, bars (with descriptions and page links), markers and the date range come across. The original macro stays on the page until you remove it.

Import > CSV file: columns are matched by name. Title (or Name) and Start are required; Lane, End, Type (Bar, Milestone or Marker), Progress, Color, Link (a Jira key, or page: and a page id), Depends on (titles separated by ;) and Notes are optional. Dates can be 2026-03-31, 3/31/2026 or 31.03.2026; tick "day first" for 31/03/2026. Rows without a valid start date are listed, never dropped silently. A CSV downloaded from Milewell imports back as it was.

If the roadmap already has items you can Add to this roadmap or Replace this roadmap (the old one stays in the history).

Copy, download and export

Copy / download: copy the roadmap as a PNG (paste it into slides, chat or email), download PNG or SVG in a light or dark version, copy or download a CSV. If your browser blocks copying inside Confluence, Milewell downloads the file instead.

Exporting the page to PDF or Word includes the roadmap as a picture and a table of every bar and milestone with lanes, dates, progress and links.

Space overview and recovery

Space settings > Milewell roadmaps lists every roadmap in the space you can see, with its history and downloads. Space admins also see roadmaps whose page was deleted or restricted, so a plan is never lost with its page. When a page is copied, the copy starts with its own copy of the roadmap (if you can see the original); editing one never changes the other.

Dark mode

Milewell follows Confluence's light and dark themes. Colors are picked per theme, so a roadmap made in one reads well in the other.

Subscription

If the subscription becomes inactive, roadmaps stay readable and downloadable, with their history; editing, restoring and importing stop until it is active again. PDF and Word exports then contain the table without the picture.

Limits

Up to 100 lanes, 3,000 bars, 1,000 milestones, 3,000 dependencies and 200 markers per roadmap.

Privacy and security

Milewell runs entirely on Atlassian's Forge platform (Runs on Atlassian). Roadmaps and their versions are stored in your site's Forge SQL database. Pictures and CSV files are made in your browser. Nothing is sent to Great Work or any third party. See the Privacy Policy.
