Idiomark documentation

Idiomark: Multilingual Pages for Confluence links Confluence pages that are language versions of each other. Every language is an ordinary Confluence page. Idiomark adds a language switcher, sends readers to their own language, and tells translators when a translation has fallen behind its source.

How it works

  • A language set is one source page and its translations. Each translation is a normal page with its own title, place in the page tree, restrictions and history.
  • Nothing is wrapped in a macro and nothing is hidden inside the page. Search finds each language on its own, PDF and Word export give you one language, and every macro and app on the page keeps working.
  • Idiomark remembers which version of the source each translation was last brought up to date with. When the source text changes, the translation is flagged out of date.

Set up a space (space admins)

Space settings > Languages (listed with the space's app settings):

  1. Source language: the language pages in this space are written in.
  2. Translated into: the languages this space should have. The dashboard counts a page as "not translated" for each of these it is missing.
  3. Where new translation pages go:
    • Mirror the tree (default): a German translation goes under the German version of the source's parent page. If the parent has no German version, it goes under the German top page you set here (for example your German home page), else under the source page.
    • Under the source page, or Next to the source page.
  4. Starting a translation: a full copy (translators type over the text) or the layout only (headings, tables, macros, images and code kept, text left empty).
  5. Language banner: on every page that has language versions, or only when the reader has a better language available or the translation is out of date.
  6. Language labels: Idiomark adds lang-de, lang-fr, ... labels, so Confluence search can be filtered by language (search, then filter by label).

Add a translation

On the source page, open Languages in the byline (under the title) > Translate:

  • Add a language version: pick the language, a full copy or the layout only, an optional title (default: the source title plus the language name, for example "Setup (Deutsch)") and an optional translator. Idiomark creates the page as you, using Confluence's own page copy, so images, attachments and restrictions come along. The new page is in progress until someone marks it up to date.
  • Link a page that is already translated: search by title, URL or page id, choose the page's language and tick "It is already up to date" if it is. Use this for sites translated before Idiomark.

Pages in a language set can't be in a second set. A page can't be its own translation.

Read in your language

  • The banner at the top of the page lists the other languages by their own names (Deutsch, Français, 日本語). Click one to open it.
  • Languages in the byline lists every version with its status.
  • My reading language (Languages tab): choose a language, or leave it on Automatic to use your Atlassian language and then your browser's language. Choose what happens when a page has a version in your language: a suggestion in the banner (default), open it automatically, or nothing. After you pick a language in the switcher, automatic opening pauses for 30 minutes in that set, so you can read the original.
  • Versions you don't have permission to view are counted but not named.

Keep translations up to date (translators)

  • On a translation, the banner says when the source changed after the translation was last updated, and how many source versions it is behind.
  • What changed (banner button, or the byline tab) shows the source blocks that were removed and added since this translation's base version, with the unchanged block before each change for orientation. A changed paragraph shows as removed (old text) plus added (new text).
  • Side by side shows the source and the translation next to each other.
  • When the translation is updated, click Mark up to date with source version N. You need edit permission on the translation.

Idiomark compares the actual text and title, not version numbers. A new source version that only changes restrictions, labels or properties, or an edit that is undone, does not flag translations. When a page that the source links to is renamed, Confluence rewrites the link silently; that doesn't flag translations either.

Assign translators

On the source page's Translate tab, pick a translator for each language. On the space's Translations page, "Assigned to me and not up to date" is each translator's queue.

The Translations page (every space)

Open it from the space sidebar (Apps > Translations):

  • Coverage per language: how many source pages are up to date, out of date, in progress or not translated, with a progress bar. "Create the N missing" creates every missing translation for that language.
  • Pages and translations: every source page with a cell per language. Filter by language, state, or your assignments.
  • Pages without language versions: list the space's pages that are in no language set, pick some, choose a language, and create their translations in one go.
  • Recheck sources now re-reads source pages whose version changed, for the rare case an edit event arrived late.

Unlink or change

  • Unlink (on a translation, or per language on the source) removes the link and the lang- label. The page itself is not changed or deleted.
  • Remove all language links (on the source) dissolves the set.
  • Source language can be changed on the source page's Translate tab.

What Idiomark doesn't do

  • It does not translate text and sends nothing outside Atlassian. Your translators write the translations.
  • Blog posts are not supported, only pages.
  • Translation pages are separate pages, so comments, likes and watchers are per language.

Subscription

Idiomark is paid from the first user, billed by Atlassian, with a 30-day free trial. If the subscription lapses, readers keep the language switcher and anyone with edit permission can still unlink pages; creating, linking, out-of-date flags and the Translations page come back when it is renewed. Flags stay accurate in the meantime because Idiomark keeps tracking source changes.

Privacy

Idiomark stores page ids, language codes, version numbers, a one-way fingerprint of each source page's text, and Atlassian account ids for reading preferences and translator assignments, in Atlassian's Forge storage for your site. Full policy: https://greatwork.company/apps/idiomark/privacy
