Rankwell documentation (public KB source)

Get started (5 minutes)

  1. Pick methods for a space. Space settings > Rankwell. For each work type choose a method (for example Epic = WSJF, Story = RICE, Bug = Value / Effort) or leave it "Not scored". Optional: a JQL filter for the scoring page (default statusCategory != Done) and team scoring.
  2. Score. Open the space's Rankwell page. Each method has a tab with its inputs as columns. Fill them in; the score previews as you type. Click Save.
  3. Sort by it anywhere. The score is in the Priority score field: add it as a column in list view or search, use it in JQL ("Priority score" > 100 ORDER BY "Priority score" DESC), filters, subscriptions and dashboard gadgets.
  4. Rank the backlog. On the Rankwell page click Rank backlog by score > Rank now.

The built-in methods

WSJFBusiness value, Time criticality, Risk reduction / opportunity, Job size (1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 20)(value + time + risk) / size
ICEImpact, Confidence, Ease (1 to 10)impact * confidence * ease
Value / EffortValue, Effort (1 to 10)value / effort

Jira admins can edit any of them (Jira settings > Apps > Rankwell > Edit) and reset them to the default.

Custom methods

Jira settings > Apps > Rankwell > New method.

  • Inputs: up to 12. Each is a Scale (labelled values, one per line: 3 = High), a Number (optional minimum and maximum) or a Jira field (any number field, or Original or Remaining estimate in hours; pick several and the first with a value is used).
  • Formula: the input names with + - * / ^ and parentheses, plus min, max, avg, sum, round(x, decimals), abs, sqrt, log10 and if(condition, then, else). Use Try it to check the result before saving.
  • Decimals: how the score is rounded (0 to 4).
  • After editing a method in use, tick Recalculate existing scores to update every work item scored with it.

A score is empty, never a wrong number, when an input is missing or the formula can't be calculated (for example division by zero); the panel says why.

Team scoring

Space settings > Rankwell > Team scoring. Each person's inputs are kept separately; the score uses the median (default) or the mean of each input. Blind rating hides other people's ratings until you have rated. Withdraw your rating from the work item panel.

Rank backlog by score

Reorders the work items in the current list (method tab plus any JQL filter, up to 1,000 items) so the highest score is on top. Ties keep their current order; unscored items go below the scored ones. Work items outside the list keep their place. You need Schedule work items permission.

Searching the score

  • "Priority score" is a normal number field in JQL, filters, list view and exports.
  • rankwellMethod = "wsjf", rankwellRaters >= 3 and rankwellScoredAt >= -7d find work items by method, number of raters and when they were last scored.

Data

Rankwell runs on Atlassian. Scores live on your work items (an issue property plus the Priority score field); settings live in Forge storage. Nothing is sent outside Atlassian.
