Chartmere documentation

Chartmere puts Jira charts on Confluence pages: pie, donut, bar, stacked bar, line over time, created vs resolved and two-dimensional tables over any JQL. Live charts count only the work items each reader can browse in Jira. Snapshots freeze a chart with its date for everyone who can view the page.

Get started

  1. A Confluence admin installs Chartmere and connects it to Jira on the same site (Atlassian Administration > Apps > Chartmere). Confluence settings > Chartmere shows the connection.
  2. Edit a page and type /Jira chart (Chartmere). The settings panel opens.
  3. Enter the JQL for the work items, for example project = ABC AND fixVersion = "3.5". Saved filters work too: filter = 12345.
  4. Pick a chart type and the field to group by, then press Save. Save checks the JQL with Jira and counts the work items you can browse.
  5. Publish the page.

Chart types

TypeUsesGood for
Pie, donutGroup by one field; count or sumShare of work by status, team, priority
Bar (vertical or horizontal)Group by one field; count, sum or averageComparing teams, components, assignees
Stacked barBars by one field, stacked by anotherStatus by priority, work type by component
Line over timeA date field by day, week, month, quarter or year; optional one line per valueWork created per week, story points resolved per month
Created vs resolvedCreated and resolved per period, rolling or fixed dates; running totals; unresolved trendIs the backlog growing?
Two-dimensional tableRows by one field, columns by another, with totalsAssignee by status, team by work type

Any field with values can group: status, status category, priority, work type, assignee, reporter, labels, components, fix versions, sprints, parent, teams, select lists, number fields and dates. Work items with no value are shown as "No value" (or "Unassigned"); turn that off in the settings. Charts keep the biggest N values and fold the rest into "Other".

Measure. Count work items, or sum or average a number field such as Story point estimate or time tracking (shown in hours). A pie chart can count or sum but not average.

Multi-value fields. A work item with two labels counts under both, so parts can add up to more than the total. The chart says so under the numbers.

Who sees what

  • Live charts (default): each reader sees only the work items they can browse in Jira, including issue security levels. Someone who cannot browse a space sees a chart without that space. Readers who are not signed in see a message instead of a live chart.
  • Snapshots: a page editor presses Take snapshot on the published page. The values, the date and who took it are shown to everyone who can view the page, including people without Jira access. Only page editors can replace a snapshot. If you change the chart settings so they need other fields, take a new snapshot.
  • currentUser() in the JQL means the person reading the page.

Reader filters and drill-down

Offer up to three filter fields (for example Component, Assignee, Team) in the settings. Readers pick values on the published page to narrow the chart; nothing they pick is saved. The table under the chart shows the numbers; every number links to exactly those work items in Jira.

Export

PDF and Word exports show the chart as a picture and the numbers as a table. Live charts export as counted for the person exporting; snapshots export as frozen.

JQL that is refused

Functions that answer differently for each person searching cannot be counted per reader: watchedIssues(), votedIssues(), issueHistory(), lastLogin(), currentLogin() and the approval functions. Write explicit values instead, for example watcher = "Kim Lee". Bad JQL is refused with Jira's own message, because Jira would otherwise answer with an empty result.

Data and privacy

Chartmere runs on Atlassian Forge and sends nothing outside your site. It reads Jira and Confluence and never changes them. See the privacy policy for what is stored and for how long.
