Lessonmark documentation
Lessonmark turns the pages you already have in Confluence into courses with quizzes, due dates, reminders, reports and signed completion records.
Where things are
| Where | Who | What |
|---|---|---|
| Apps > Lessonmark > My training | Everyone | Training that is due or overdue, completed courses with certificates, other courses to take |
| Apps > Lessonmark > Courses, Quizzes, Assignments, Records | Training managers and course owners | Build, assign, report, verify |
| Confluence home > Your training | Everyone | What needs you now |
| Lessonmark quiz macro | Page editors insert it; readers take it | A quiz or survey on any page |
| Lessonmark course macro | Page editors insert it; readers see their progress | A course card with a Start button, for onboarding hubs |
| Confluence settings > Lessonmark | Confluence admins | Training manager groups, minimum responses for private results |
Getting started
- Choose training managers. Confluence settings > Lessonmark > add one or more groups. Confluence admins are always training managers.
- Build a course. Apps > Lessonmark > Courses > New course. Add steps:
- Add a page: search by title.
- Add a page and every page under it: pick the top page; the tree is added in order.
- Add pages from a CQL search: for example
space = HR and label = "onboarding" order by title. Confluence checks the query first. Lessonmark tells you which field, value, space key or page id is wrong instead of adding nothing. - Add a quiz made under Quizzes or on a page.
- Set completion rules: renew every N months, certificates, steps in order, and an optional statement learners sign by typing their name.
- Publish, then Assign to groups or people with a due date: a fixed date, or N days after each person is assigned (good for new hires, because new group members are added every day).
Quizzes
-
Question types: one answer, several answers (all right answers must be picked), true or false, and written answers. A choice question with no right answer ticked is an opinion question and isn't scored.
-
Written answers are either collected (not scored) or marked by a reviewer. Attempts with reviewed answers wait in Quizzes > Results > Review written answers. Nobody can review their own answers.
-
Settings: pass mark, number of attempts (0 = unlimited), shuffle questions and options, and when to show the right answers (after each attempt, only after passing, never).
-
Who sees answers:
Setting Saved with the person Saved without names Results Named Answers, score, passed Per person and per question Private answers Passed or not Answers and score, with the week only Totals once the minimum number of people answered Anonymous Nothing (a salted hash only counts attempts) Answers and score, with the week only Totals once the minimum number of people answered Learners see the setting before they answer. You can make a quiz more private at any time. Once people have answered, it can't become less private: copy it into a new quiz instead. Anonymous quizzes can't be course steps, because nobody could be credited.
-
On a page: while editing, insert the Lessonmark quiz macro and publish. On the published page, people who can edit the page see Set up quiz. Copying the page gives the copy its own new quiz.
Learners
My training lists each course with its status and due date. In a course:
- Open page opens the Confluence page in a new tab. Read it, come back.
- I have read and understood it records the confirmation with the page's version number. If Confluence doesn't let you view the page, ask the course owner for access.
- Take quiz for quiz steps. Passing a quiz counts in every course it is part of.
- If the course has a statement, type your full name and Sign and complete.
- Download certificate (PDF) when the course is complete.
Courses with a renewal period show Renew soon 30 days before the completion expires; do the steps again to renew.
Reminders
Everyone sees their due training in My training and on the Confluence home page. To also notify people, pick a reminder page in the assignment: once a day, Lessonmark posts one comment there that mentions the people who are due (each "days before" reminder once) or overdue (every N days), and Confluence notifies them by their own notification settings. Anyone who can view the page can read the comment, so pick a page for the team being trained. If the comment can't be posted (for example the page restricts the app), the assignment shows Confluence's reason.
Reports
Courses > Report shows every assigned person (and anyone else who started) with status, steps done, due date, completion and expiry, plus the share of assigned people who are complete. Download CSV for spreadsheets. Quizzes > Results shows per-question and per-option totals, and per person for named quizzes.
Completion records
Each completion writes one record: course and version, completion and expiry time, each step with the page version confirmed or the quiz result, the signed statement, and a salted hash of the person. The person's name and account id are stored beside the signed part.
- Records are append-only. Each one's SHA-256 hash covers the previous record's hash, and the hash is signed with HMAC-SHA-256 using a key that only your site's Lessonmark holds (Forge secret storage).
- Records > Verify records checks the whole chain and names the first record that fails.
- Export CSV and JSON: the JSON has each record's exact signed body. Anyone can check that
sha256(bodyJson)equalshashand that each body'sprevHashequals the previous record'shash(the first one names 64 zeros). - When an Atlassian account is closed, the person's name, account id and signature are erased from their records; the signed part stays, so the chain still verifies.
