How Includewell works
Includewell checks your Webflow site for the accessibility problems an automatic check can find, shows each one where you'd fix it in Webflow, and fixes many of them with a preview first. It adds nothing to your published site. Published at https://greatwork.company/apps/includewell-for-webflow/docs.
Get started
- Install Includewell from the Webflow Apps marketplace and approve your site.
- Open the site in the Designer, then Includewell from the Apps panel.
- On Site audit, press Audit now. Your 14-day trial (10 audits) starts here. A small site takes a minute; you can close the panel and come back.
What an audit reads
- Your published site at its first custom domain (or its webflow.io address), starting from Webflow's page list, your sitemap and the links between pages. Up to 1,500 pages per audit.
- CMS template pages: up to 25 published item pages per template. A template's own issues (a heading, a button) repeat on every item, so they're reported once for the template.
- The stylesheets each page loads (from your site or Webflow's CDN), for contrast and focus styles.
- Your CMS: the rich text and image fields of up to 10,000 items, in the primary language.
- Your image assets' alt text.
Includewell reads pages as "IncludewellBot" and follows robots.txt. If your robots.txt keeps crawlers out, add this in Site settings > SEO > Indexing and publish:
User-agent: IncludewellBot
Allow: /
The checks (WCAG 2.2 A and AA)
Each issue is marked Fix (fails a criterion as published), Review (very likely a problem, but a person has to look: an empty alt may be on purpose) or Tip (best practice). Every issue names its criterion.
| Area | Checks |
|---|---|
| Images | No alt attribute; empty alt on an image that isn't inside a link or button; alt that is a file name, a generic word or very long; SVGs and image buttons without a name; CMS image fields without alt text |
| Structure | Skipped heading levels, empty headings, no H1 or several; lists with items that aren't list items; data tables without header cells; a way to skip to the content (Main element, headings or a skip link); repeated landmarks; typed bullets in rich text |
| Links and buttons | No text a screen reader can say; "click here", "read more" and raw web addresses as link text |
| Forms | Fields without a label; placeholder used as the only label; invalid autocomplete values; labels pointing at missing IDs |
| Page | Language not set or invalid; no title; zoom turned off on phones; a timed refresh |
| Color | Text contrast below 4.5:1 (3:1 for large text), with the nearest passing color; focus outlines removed in your styles with nothing in their place |
| ARIA | Misspelled or unknown attributes, invalid values, invalid roles, roles missing a required state, references to missing IDs, duplicate IDs that labels use, hidden elements that still take focus, positive tabindex |
| Media | Embeds (maps, videos, forms) without a title; background videos without a pause button |
What an automatic check can't do
- Judge whether alt text, labels and headings are accurate, or whether the reading order makes sense.
- Use your site with a keyboard and a screen reader, check captions on video, or open menus, tabs and pop-ups.
- Measure contrast over images, gradients, videos or semi-transparent layers. Includewell counts those and lists them in the report; it never guesses.
Pages are checked at desktop width (1280 pixels). The This page tab checks tablet and phone breakpoints from your classes in the Designer.
A clean report doesn't mean your site conforms to WCAG or meets the ADA, the European Accessibility Act or any other law. It means the automatic checks found nothing. Have a person review the site too.
Fixing
Every fix shows a preview first ("Not in Webflow yet"), writes only where the item or asset hasn't changed since the preview, and can be undone from History for 30 days.
- Alt text on an asset: every image that takes its alt text from the asset gets it.
- Alt text, heading level or link text in CMS rich text: tick "Publish" to update the live item too.
- CMS image fields: Fill alt text from a template builds each item's alt text from its own text fields,
for example
{name}, our {city} bakery. Items where a field is empty, or where the result is a file name or a generic word, are skipped and listed. No AI writes your alt text. - This page tab: Check this page reads the page open in the Designer. Pick a heading level, type alt text or an aria-label, or include the suggested color for a class, then Preview and Apply. A color change applies to the class everywhere it's used; the preview says how many elements on the page use it.
- Open in the Designer switches to the page and selects the element the issue describes.
- Things Includewell can't change for you (a missing Main element, the site language, an embed's title, focus styles) come with how to fix them in Webflow under Why and how.
Mark an image decorative, or an issue checked by hand, to take it off the list. It's recorded with your name and shown in the report.
Reports
- PDF report: summary, trend, every issue by check with its WCAG criterion and how to fix it, what was dismissed and by whom, and what an automatic check doesn't cover. Tagged for screen readers. Add your agency's name under "Prepared by".
- CSV: every open and dismissed issue, one per row.
- Accessibility statement: fill in your organization, a contact email, the conformance status (in the W3C's wording) and whether a person reviewed the site. The known limitations come from your last audit. Includewell refuses "Fully conforms" while the audit lists failures, or without a review by a person. Copy the HTML into a Rich Text element or an Embed on your statement page.
Re-checks
Settings > Re-check on a schedule: weekly or daily. Each re-check is a full audit (during the trial it counts toward the 10). History shows the trend and what's new and fixed since the audit before. The digest switch shows the same summary by email once email is switched on for Includewell.
Plans
- $59 a month or $590 a year per site.
- Workspace: $249 a month or $2,490 a year for up to 10 sites in one Webflow workspace.
- 14-day free trial per site with 10 audits, from the first audit. No card needed.
- When the trial ends, audits and fixes pause and nothing on your site changes. Results, reports, history and undo stay available for 30 days. Plans renew automatically; cancel any time in Plan > Manage billing.
Removing Includewell
Settings > Remove Includewell deletes your audits, history, dismissals, settings and the undo journal, and revokes its access. Your site, CMS and assets aren't changed. Uninstalling in Webflow does the same within a day.
