How Combwell works
Combwell checks your Webflow site for the things a launch shouldn't ship with: misspellings, leftover placeholder text, test contact details, staging and broken links, empty CMS fields and missing site basics. It shows each one where you'd fix it, fixes CMS fields for you with a preview first, and fills in a go/no-go launch checklist. It adds nothing to your published site. Get started
- Install Combwell from the Webflow Apps marketplace and approve your site.
- Open the site in the Designer, then Combwell from the Apps panel.
- On Site QA, press Audit now. Your 14-day trial (10 audits) starts here. A small site takes a minute; you can close the panel and come back.
- Add your brand names and any names or jargon to Words, so they're checked the right way from the next audit on.
Live site or staging
Settings > Which site to check: the live site (your first custom domain) or staging (your webflow.io address). A site without a custom domain is checked on staging: that's the pre-launch checklist. On the live site Combwell also flags links to webflow.io and pages hidden from search engines (noindex). On staging, a full address to your webflow.io site is flagged too, because it would keep pointing at staging after launch.
What an audit reads
- Your published site, starting from Webflow's page list, your sitemap and the links between pages. Up to 2,500 pages per audit.
- CMS template pages: up to 25 published item pages per template. A template's own issues repeat on every item, so they're reported once for the template.
- Every image and icon the pages show (up to 2,000 per audit), asked once whether it loads.
- Your site's 404 page (one made-up address).
- Your CMS: the text, rich text, link, email and phone fields of up to 20,000 published items, in the primary language.
Combwell reads pages as "CombwellBot" and follows robots.txt. If your robots.txt keeps crawlers out, add this in Site settings > SEO > Indexing and publish:
User-agent: CombwellBot
Allow: /
To skip an element (a quote in another language, a code sample), give it the custom attribute combwell-ignore
(Element settings > Custom attributes). Spelling also skips anything with translate="no" or
spellcheck="false".
The checks
Each issue is marked Fix (clearly wrong as published), Review (very likely wrong, a person decides) or Tip. Blocks launch marks the ones that make the launch checklist say No-go.
| Area | Checks |
|---|---|
| Content | Possible misspellings with suggestions; Lorem ipsum; Webflow's default element text ("Heading", "This is some text inside of a div block.", "Text Link", "Button Text", "Tab 1"...), its sample rich text and its gray placeholder image; TODO, TBD, FIXME, [insert ...] and {{...}} notes; test emails (example.com, test@...) and phone numbers (555, 123-456-7890) in text and in mailto and tel links; an old copyright year; Webflow's default form success and error messages |
| Links and images | Links and images pointing at webflow.io on the live site; http:// links; http:// images, scripts and files on https pages; links to your own pages that answer "not found"; images that don't load |
| CMS | Fields that are empty for some items while the template page shows them, matched to the field by comparing item pages and the element's class name |
| Search and sharing | Missing and duplicate titles; missing and duplicate meta descriptions; pages without an Open Graph image; a missing or default favicon and webclip; noindex on the live site; Webflow's default 404 page |
| Brand | Names in your brand list written any other way (case, spaces, hyphens); names Combwell finds written more than one way across the site |
Spelling
- Dictionaries: English (US and UK), Spanish, French and Brazilian Portuguese, picked from each page's
lang(Webflow sets it from your locales). Pages that say only "en" use the English you pick in Settings. - Skipped on purpose: words with digits, web and email addresses, words with a capital inside (iPhone), short ALL CAPS words (SEO, FAQ), file names.
- Your site's words (Words tab, or Add to dictionary on an issue) are never flagged again, on any page.
- Pages in other languages get every check except spelling; the audit card and the report say which.
- No AI reads your text. The dictionaries are open-licensed files on our server.
What an automatic check can't do
- Judge whether text is right for the client, only whether it looks unfinished or misspelled. A dictionary doesn't know every name, so each possible typo is yours to confirm.
- Run scripts, open menus, tabs and pop-ups, or log in. Text that only appears after a click is checked as it sits in the page.
- Check grammar or tone.
Fixing
In the CMS, Combwell fixes it for you. Every fix shows a preview of each item first ("Not in Webflow yet"), writes only where the item hasn't changed since the preview, can publish the live items it changed, and can be undone from History for 30 days.
- Replace in the CMS: a misspelled word (the suggestion is filled in), a brand variant, a test email or phone
number, a
TODOnote, an old year. Whole words only; in rich text only the text changes, never links or code. - Rewrite the link in the CMS: webflow.io links to your live domain, http:// links to https://.
- Fill in the CMS: type a value for an empty text, email, phone or link field, for every item where it's empty. Fields that already have a value are left alone.
- Replace the text in the CMS: filler text (Lorem ipsum, Webflow's sample rich text) replaced by the text you type.
On static pages and templates, Open page in the Designer switches to the page; the issue shows the text and where it is on the page. Site-wide items (favicon, webclip, 404 page) say where to fix them under Why and how.
Hide takes an issue off the list (recorded with your name and shown in the report). Add to dictionary hides a spelling issue everywhere and keeps the word for every audit.
Launch checklist
The Launch tab turns the last audit into a go/no-go list:
- No-go while anything that blocks a launch is open: filler or placeholder content, notes, test contact details, staging links, broken links or images, mixed content, missing titles, a missing or default favicon, noindex on the live site, no custom domain on a live audit.
- Go with notes while something is left to review (spelling, brand names, sharing images, form messages, CMS fields, the 404 page) or a manual item is unticked.
- Go when everything passes and every manual item is ticked.
Manual items: a test form submission reached the right inbox; pages checked on a phone and a tablet; 301 redirects from the old site; analytics, cookie consent and tracking codes; client access (seat, site plan, billing). Ticks are saved with who and when. Download the checklist (PDF) puts the verdict, every item and a sign-off line on the first page, with the full report after it.
Reports
- Launch checklist PDF and QA report PDF: summary, trend, every issue by check with where it is and how to fix it in Webflow, what was dismissed and by whom. Tagged for screen readers. Add your agency's name under "Prepared by".
- CSV: every open and dismissed issue, one per row, with the suggestion and how to fix it.
Re-checks
Settings > Re-check on a schedule: weekly or monthly. Each re-check is a full audit (during the trial it counts toward the 10). You can also audit by hand up to 10 times a day. History shows the trend and what's new and fixed since the audit before. The digest switch sends the same summary by email once email is switched on for Combwell.
Plans
- $39 a month or $390 a year per site.
- Workspace: $149 a month or $1,490 a year for up to 10 sites in one Webflow workspace.
- 14-day free trial per site with 10 audits, from the first audit. No card needed.
- When the trial ends, audits and fixes pause and nothing on your site changes. Results, reports, history and undo stay available for 30 days. Plans renew automatically; cancel any time in Plan > Manage billing.
Removing Combwell
Settings > Remove Combwell deletes your audits, history, dismissals, words, brand names, checklist ticks, settings and the undo journal, and revokes its access. Your site and CMS aren't changed. Uninstalling in Webflow does the same within a day.
