Changetrail documentation

What it does

Changetrail searches the change history of many Jira issues at once and exports it. Every row is one field change: when, which issue, who, which field, the old value and the new value.

Where to find it

  • Apps > Changetrail: search any issues you can see.
  • Project sidebar > Changetrail: the same, limited to that project.
  • Jira settings > Apps > Changetrail (Jira admins): who can use it, how long results are kept, size caps.

Run a search

  1. Issues (JQL): any JQL, for example project = OPS AND type = Bug. Leave it empty for every issue you can see. Changetrail adds ORDER BY key itself.
  2. Changed from / to: the date range of the changes (your local dates; "to" includes that day). Quick buttons: Today, 7, 30 and 90 days. A start date also narrows the JQL to issues updated since then, which makes big searches much faster.
  3. Only these fields / Not these fields: pick from your site's fields (system and custom). Picking 10 or fewer lets Jira filter on its side, which is fastest.
  4. Changed by / Not by: people. Made by: Everyone, People, or Apps and automation (changes by apps, Automation for Jira and Jira itself).
  5. From value / To value: an exact old or new value (display value or id, any case). Old or new value contains: any text.
  6. Search history. Changetrail first finds the issues (as you, so only issues you can open), then reads their history in the background. Rows, the most changed fields, the busiest people and changes per day appear as it goes. Once the issues are found you can leave the page; open the search again from Recent searches.

Download CSV

Download CSV builds the file in your browser from the stored results, so any size works. Columns: Changed (UTC), Changed (your time zone, optional), Issue, Summary, Type, Project, Changed by, Field, From, To, Link, and with Raw ids: author account id and type, field id, from and to ids, issue id, change id. The file is UTF-8 with a BOM (Excel opens it correctly), and cells that start with =, +, - or @ get a leading apostrophe so they cannot run as formulas. Rows are in time order within each block of 1,000 issues; sort by the first column for one timeline.

Saved audits

Save as audit stores the current search with a name. Tick Share to let everyone who can use Changetrail see and run it; each person gets results only from issues they can open. On the Saved audits tab: Run, New since last run (only changes since your previous run of that audit), Edit (owner or Jira admin), Copy, Delete. Audits saved on a project page stay limited to that project.

Admin settings

  • Who can use Changetrail: group names, comma separated. Empty means everyone. Jira admins always can.
  • Keep results for: 1 to 30 days (default 7). Results expire on their own.
  • Most issues per search / Most changes per search: up to 250,000 and 1,000,000 (defaults 100,000 and 500,000). A search that hits a cap says so.

Limits

  • Changetrail shows what Jira's change history records (the History tab). Comment edits, worklog details and views are not in it.
  • Field names: Jira stores the name in the language of whoever made the change; Changetrail shows today's name for the field.
  • Changes by people who no longer exist on the site show as Jira shows them.
  • Results are private to the person who ran the search.
